have any of you had a panic attack before. i'm ok this morning but last nite was in bad shape. waves of anxiety and panic overwhelmining me in waves for over 2 1/2 hours. could not calm down. finally it eased off and i was able to go to bed and sleep.i once had cycling panic attacks that lasted in waves every day for a month. it was hell. if you are in a panic attack mode i would like to know what works for you to get out of it. i tried deep breathing, cold rag to forehead, talk therapy, soothing music , but nothing worked. so if anyone here suffers from panic attacks (my last episode was about 2 years ago)tell me about your experience and what helped you. thank you! raindrop PS. ok now. just want to be ready if another one comes along.

medication helps better than physical therapies ... it reduces the autonomic component .. like sweating and palpitations which are the things that make panic distressing ... once those are taken care off .. one can focus on cognitive aspects of the cause :)

Raindrop, do you know and want to share what made you get these "panic attacks"? Was it a fight with you're boy/girlfriend, lost your job, etc...?
I've never had them my self, but my X girlfriend had them once after a heavy fight with me. Never seen her like that before, gasping for air and almost blacking out :\ I talked to her and it stopped after some water and talking. This is what I defined as a panic attack, but you may be talking about something else?

Wow. I'm sorry Raindrop. I have them often but never for the frequency and duration that you're experiencing. For some people it works to try and be calm, using soothing techniques like you described above.

For me to feel in control I have to be proactive. I most often get them at the end of the day just before falling asleep (when I think about all I didn't do and/or have to do tommorrow). My heart will skip a beat, then start racing, I feel faint, my vision is slightly blurred, etc. I had experienced these physical symptoms several times before I had a true panic attack with the intense feeling of dread. So when it finally happened I recognized what it was.

I couldn't just lie there so I got up out of bed and researched everything I could about them. That helped me calm down while I waited it out. It also helps if I get up and SLOWLY walk or pace around the house. Lets my body catch up to my brain or something. The only sedentary tactic that works for me, is to feel somone else's heartbeat (lying close, etc.) Soon mine starts to sync with theirs.
